An Essay About the Prevalence of Rape Crimes in Our Society
Rape. The word itself can send shivers down the spine. I do believe if you begin to consider the many crimes that people can inflict on one another this one is one of, if not the most heinous. If you start to think about murder, which most would consider the most serious of crimes, there are many cases where a murder is justified. Perhaps it was self-defense, or a victim of abuse as the case of an abused wife who finally cannot take any more and finds her God given strength to kill the bastard. In these examples the murder is explainable and justified, no one feels this murderer performed an act against the human race. However can you think of justifiable rape? This idea sounds ridiculous. Rape is predominately a crime of man against woman. Now I do realize there can be cases of woman against man but these are extremely rare and for purposes of this essay I will focus on man against woman. Quite unfortunately incidents of rape are increasing greatly in comparison to population increase. Take Connecticut where I am from for example. In 1960 Connecticut had a population of 2,535,234 with the number of reported of rape cases being 103. By 2005 Connecticut’s population has grown to 3,510,297 an increase of 28%. In contrast reported rape cases has grown to 702 a whopping 86% increase! Here are some other statistics that will shock you. Every two and a half minutes a woman is raped in the US. One in six women will be the victim of sexual assault. These are staggering statistics. While most may think of rape as a sex crime, which it is, I believe the root of the crime is that of violence against women by men. The majority of rape cases almost always involve violence. The male rapists are probably submissive men who feel out of place in a world where the image of men is that of a dominant figure. These few who can’t address their feelings act out horrible acts of violence against to try to live up to the dominant stereotype. Take the following case for example, in Hartford, CT a young woman as attacked by an unknown attacker in a stairwell of the parking garage where she worked. In addition to the sexual assault, the attacker struck her so many times with the handle of a knife that he fractured her jaw and so severely damaged the socket around her right eye that the eye had to be surgically removed and fitted with a glass eye. Think about the damage that has been done to this innocent woman. Is it any wonder that dominant women can
